Sergio Pizzorno was born on 15 December 1980,in Newton Abbot, Devon. "Strange one," he says, "My mum just liked the hospital so she decided to have me there, then drove back to Leicester."
Meighan was born on 11 January 1981, at Leicester Royal Infirmary. His father, a window cleaner, was a Motown fan. His mother, a nurse, used to sing him to sleep with songs by `50s jazz chanteuse Kay Starr. When he was three he loved Ringo Starr`s 1973 solo album, Ringo, as much for Klaus Voorman`s artwork as his favourite track, I`m The Greatest. Life in Blaby, a village five miles south of Leicester, passed uneventfully, though Meighan recalls cracking a "kid with ginger hair" around the head with a piece of fence at the age of seven for bullying his younger brother.
Raised on his parents` tasteful collection of Stones and blues records, Pizzorno grew up in neighbouring Countesthorpe where, at the age of 11, he started attending Leysland High School. "I despised being told what to learn," says the guitarist. "I hated music teachers, teaching you Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the glockenspiel." His glandfather moved from Genoa to Leicester "in the late `50s, early `60s" to work as a mechanic. Pizzorno`s father went into the family business and his mother teaches. "She does special needs - the kids who brought knives to school or set fire to things." On his first day at school he met future KASABIAN bassist Chris Edwards and the two soon became friends. Meighan, who Pizzorno knew from local kickabouts and seeing him at Leicester City matches, was already something of a celebrity. "Tom was the sort of guy that everyone knew," says Pizzorno. "He was the most bizarre, interesting kid I`d ever met. He had a sparkle, and he`d clap a lot. If he came into a room, you`d know he was there."

It is impossible not to like Tom Meighan, an unaffected man who never fails to pass by without giving you a pat on the back or a smile. Sitting in the back lounge of KASABIAN`s tourbus, it is sometimes trick to follow what he is saying, like watching a video of somebody speaking normally while randomly hitting pause, fast- forward and, occasionally, rewind. Throughout the day, most quiet moments have been filled by Meighan repeating the phrase, "That`s a bit weird, innit?" or singing snatches of the chorus from 50 Cent`s Candy Shop in a sarcastic tone of voice. "I`ve been up and down," he says. "I`ve got bursts of energy. You`ve got to get your levels right, haven`t you, really? I`d had some Skittles so that`s fu**ing…they haven`t got the E numbers in them any more, have they?"
Despite the intermittent salvos to Meighan. "Yeah, I am fragile," he says. "I`m not an angry person. If you break me down, I`m an angel with wings." Towards the end of 2005 KASABIAN had some time off. a change of pace that the singer found difficult to cope with. "I was dark for about two months. I was bored, I found myself in a bar at one o` clock in the afternoon, drinking alchol and doing things. You know what I`m trying to say. It was horrible and I felt depressed. Just getting in the studio snd making this reord saved me."
Saved you?
"Music saved me. It was the only thing that I could do. It saved me from destruction or whatever I was going to do with myself. It`s just the way it goes. You`ve got to walk the yellow brick road sometimes, haven`t you? It`s not normal, what I do. Well, to me it is. It`s everything I wanted to be. Now we`re doing it, and if it gets bigger, then f***ing Lord have mercy, mate. Lord have mercy on our souls."
You`re not really worried, are you?
"Am I hell. I`m just saying Lord have mercy for the fun of it."

The album`s ominous closing track, The Doberman, was captured at three o` clock in the morning after a group absinthe bender. "It just makes you feel great," shrugs Pizzorno. Creative stimulants, he insists, were restricted to liberal amounts of alcohol. Mostly, "You have a playback and you get the sweets out," he says.
Sweets?
"You know," says Pizzorno, smiling. "Blackjacks, Fruit Salads…"
"F***ing sherbet dips, stuff like that," says Meighan.
Drugs-or, if you prefer, "sweets" -is a subject about which Pizzorno is surprisingly coy, given KASABIAN`s core principle of "having it" whenever possible. "My mum's going to love this one" he says, before revealing that he was 20 when he first took ecstasy. "She's oblivious to what we get up to." Which is what exactly? Fat rails of cocaine? "I personally don't get on with it. I can't speak for anyone else, but there aren't many that don't have a cheeky line now and again."
Meighan too, is reluctant to discuss his foemative experiences with drugs because, "I wouldn't want my parents to know, but they probably had some idea." Yes, they probably did, as when he was 16 Meighan liked to take magic mushrooms in the park, arriving home at midnight to "look at the lights for hours."

May the force be with U!
The mood in the camp is congenial. However, when talk turns to whether Americans seem to be "getting" the band or not-specifically when mention is made of a review from US music magazine Rolling Stone that described Empire as less than "a photocopy of a photocopy a photocopy of the last 40 years of English rock"-only Pizzorno retains his sangfroid.

SP: You take from the past. Look at The Rolling Stones. It`s quite common.
TM: I must have done something to the c*** to alarm him. He is a c***, whoever wrote that. C-*-*-*. C***. And if I see him, I`ll f***ing smash his head in.
SP: The fact is…
TM: He must have had it in for us to give us that kind of review.{Very animated now}What does he know, anyway? He`s f***ing American. Now get the f*** out of my face.

Calm down, Tom.←笑。
TM: Well, I can`t help it. I`m an emotional guy. When someone reviews me and my brothers like that then f*** him. We learn, man. He`ll learn. One day I`ll probably shake his hand, buy him a drink…
SP: Call him a c***.
TM: And call him a c*** again, yeah.

What`s your philosophy when it comes to "having it"?
SP: It`s very simple.
TM: It`s very simple.
SP: Get big or go home.
TM:: Get big or go home. Just get off your f***ing trolley, mate. And if you don`t want to get invvolved, then just f*** off.

What do you make of the music that`s big…
TM: Crap.←笑。

…in America at the moement? You didn`t know what Iwas going to say.
TM: It`s s***. There`s nothing organic any more. It`s all fed and believed in. You go on the internet and download it. Oh, what do you think? Get your own opinion.
SP: I didn`t really hear anything in America. There was no music anywhere, man. It was weird.
TM: F***ing rubbish, mate. The problem with music today…{continues on this theme for some time}. Music is a f***ing spiritual thing. It`s born in you. you give it and you receive it. Go and fetch me a cheesecake with my grills on, you konw? Get f***ed Serious, you know? Can i have a cigarette, Please? Sorry to go off on one. I always get upset, mete. that`s the way I am. Some day I`ll learn to control that anger, like a Jedi Knight. I`m passionate.
Meighan gets up and attempts to leave the room via locked cupboard. "Other door, you twat." advises Pizzorno. 〜
